The 3R’s of Great “Pitches”
(A WDA-approved Workforce Skills Qualification Course (WSQ) conducted by IAS)
Both Steve Jobs of Apple and management guru, Tom Peters, use them. You too can make great business presentations both to win more clients or more support for your projects from bosses and peers, by learning about the 3R’s from this WDA-approved Workforce Skills Qualification course conducted by the Institute of Advertising, Singapore (IAS)
Both Steve Jobs and Tom Peters undoubtedly have a gift for public speaking. But peer behind the curtain and you will find that these expert persuaders do not rely on their charisma alone to win over audiences. Instead, they practice the three R’s of good presentations – they RESEARCH, (w)RITE and re-write their script and REHEARSE their delivery.
If you are prepared to put in the work, you too can at least match their competency even if you do not have their charisma.
The elements that make up the 3R’s of their secret formula are:
1) RESEARCH
These cover:
i) The brief (or the objective of the “pitch” or presentation)
ii) The subject of the pitch
iii) The people, especially the key decision-makers in the audience
iv) The organization that issued the brief for the “pitch”
2) (w)RITE
i) How to construct a “story board” to support your presentation
ii) How to write a compelling story of your proposal, including the development of “twitter-like” headlines that captivate the imagination
3) REHEARSE
The course will provide you with ample opportunity to practice or rehearse your presentation. You will be able to do this with both the help of the trainer as well as your peers. And your practices will be “video-ed” so that you can see for yourself where you can improve.
Delivery methods such as maintaining eye contact with your audience, standing in a confident manner and gesturing naturally, all come with repeated rehearsals.
When you put the 3R’s together – Research, (w)Riting and Rehearsal – you will be able to deliver your pitch with passion and panache!
This Workforce Skills Qualification (WSQ) course is designed to develop competencies, in this case, making business presentations. This means it will teach not only Underpinning Theories but also the Performance Criteria involved in the competency.
The official title of the course under the WSQ framework is “Prepare a Design Presentation (CI-DES-444S-0)”
COURSE FEE & APPLICATION DETAILS
The Workforce Development Agency (WDA) will subsidise the fees for all qualified PMETs (professionals, managers, executives and technicians) who have been nominated by their company as being able to benefit from this course. They must also be Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents.
Applicants should be holding executive positions which are classified as Level 4 in the WSQ Framework. This usually means executive positions that require a university degree. However, executives holding this position with Polytechnic or A Level qualifications with a minimum of three years’ working experience, may also apply.
The fee for this 20-hour course is $800. For a limited period, the WDA will subsidise up to $600 of the course fee. Nominating companies will pay the balance of $200 nett, but they may claim for an absentee payroll subsidy from WDA.
IAS will assist companies with the application to WDA for the absentee payroll subsidy.
LIMITED PLACES
Because this is a competency-based training programme, the number of persons for each course is limited to 15. This will ensure that all learners have time to rehearse their “pitches” and not just learn the theories.
Companies who have multiple nominations may apply to send their staff in small batches so as to minimise disruption of work.
We are also able to conduct "in-house" (exclusive) training to companies that nominate at least 8 of their staff for the same training session.
